Mary Gates Hall, University of Washington
Seattle, Washington

Mary Gates Hall, the Center for Undergraduate Education, provides a memorable academic home for university students. The design challenge was to add 50,000 square feet to an historic campus gothic building in the center of the University of Washington campus in a way that complements the historic building while providing a 21st century learning and teaching environment.

Designed to match the original architectural style, the "L-shaped" addition provides structural support for the historic building, as well as a grand new entrance. Facing the University library, the entrance speaks to the importance of undergraduate learning and is a welcoming introduction to the Mary Gates Commons. Historic exterior walls, new steel trusses, and new plaster facades create a gracious and elegant interior space, which is actively used for art exhibition, receptions and as a study hall. The project was designed in association with Hartman-Cox.
