Redmond Regional Library
Redmond, Washington

The architectural character of the 30,000 square-foot Redmond Regional Library is distinguished
by a sweeping, low-slope roof that recalls the site on the floodplain of the nearby Snoqualmie
River. The roof is supported by a monumental colonnade along one façade that orients the building toward pedestrians and the street. This arcade recalls more historic public institutions with refreshing contemporary materials and design syntax. Metal panel and ceramic tile walls are richly detailed to create spatial hierarchies to distinguish reading rooms and community meeting areas. Public art
plays an important role: gargoyles depicting famous literary figures channel rainwater off the roof,
a sculpture inspired by Native American imagery provides scale and rich symbolism to the entry court, and interior displays bring the children's area to life.
