West Seattle High School is home of the largest high school alumni association in the state; the rehabilitation of West Seattle High School focused on prominently featuring the historic building while sensitively doubling the size of the facility. The addition to this 1917 landmark structure complements the massing and the scale of the original building and was arranged to provide a new entrance to the school. The new gymnasium, theater, and commons spaces surround an entry courtyard that fosters student community and serves as a foyer for the large assembly spaces. Within the landmark, the main entrance was restored, the central auditorium was re-converted to the Commons, and a gym was rehabilitated as the library. Core academic classrooms with project labs are complemented by dedicated science classrooms and laboratories, business classrooms, technical and vocational programs, art and music studios.
