Frank's Landing, Washington
WaHeLut Indian School provides a contemporary educational environment and space for community gatherings while respecting the traditional values of this diverse community of multiple Native American tribes. Perched on a hill overlooking the Nisqually River, the building appears as a Thunderbird protecting Native lands. The kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school is organized as two classroom wings flanking the center Commons. Generously bathed in natural light with a view to the river, the Commons is finished in native cedar and includes many examples of Native artifacts and artwork to culturally inspire students.
