Located in a richly diverse community, Edmonds School District’s primary goal for Lynnwood Elementary School was unification – empowering students, staff, and the community to maximize their personal, creative, and academic potential.
Bassetti’s design of the new building includes a clear main entry that leads into the school lobby. The lobby serves as a central hub and a transition area into the garden courtyard. Located at the center of the school, the courtyard is visible and accessible from nearly all areas of the building, creating a connection to the outdoors. As you move through the main corridor, the space opens up towards the garden and draws you outside. Our design incorporates classrooms for special education spaces where students have opportunities for hands-on learning and personalized instruction. These classrooms are placed in their own suite to avoid noise and other distractions, while still having access to outdoor views and natural light.
Using the universal language of color, the design unites distinctive zones as well as diverse learning communities. Colors are strategically integrated into the space to indicate an area’s function in an intuitive way. Blue represents community gathering spaces for events, red delineates areas of collaboration and learning, and yellow depicts connecting pathways – linking the spaces together to create a school that is welcoming and accessible to all students and the community.
