Hayu alqi uyxat, A4LE MacConnell Finalist
hayu alqi uyxat Named Finalist for the 2024 A4LE James D. MacConnell Award
National Recognition for a Purpose-Built Alternative School
Bassetti Architects is proud to announce that hayu alqi uyxat, meaning “Many Future Paths” in Chinook Wawa, has been selected as a finalist for the 2024 James D. MacConnell Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE). This prestigious award recognizes educational facilities that exemplify a comprehensive planning process and result in environments that support student success and well-being.
A New Model for Equity-Driven Design
Commissioned by Portland Public Schools, hayu alqi uyxat is an 85,000-square-foot facility that consolidates four alternative education programs—Alliance High School, Reconnection Services, Portland DART School, and Teen Parent Services—into a single, purpose-built campus. For decades, these programs were scattered across the city in substandard or borrowed spaces. This new facility brings visibility, dignity, and belonging to students whose needs have not been met by traditional educational environments.
Designed With—and For—the Community
The project was guided by a deep commitment to equity and inclusion, with Indigenous leaders, students, educators, and community members shaping the process from the earliest stages. Their insights are reflected throughout the space—from the school’s name and layout to the experiential graphic design that features student quotes and nature-inspired imagery.

A Treehouse for Healing and Growth
Inspired by a “treehouse” concept, the building serves as both a sanctuary and a launchpad. Mass timber structure, warm natural finishes, biophilic materials, and daylight-filled interiors create a calming and uplifting environment. The design supports trauma-informed teaching practices, social-emotional wellness, and personalized learning—allowing students to feel safe, seen, and supported.
A Commitment to Equity, Sustainability, and Student Success
hayu alqi uyxat also embodies Portland Public Schools’ broader goals around equity and sustainability. The building is tracking LEED Gold certification, includes on-site childcare, offers career and technical education spaces, and achieves high levels of minority- and women-owned business participation.
What began as a vision to centralize services has become a national model for equity-driven school design. hayu alqi uyxat is a testament to what’s possible when school districts invest in purpose-built environments that reflect the identities, aspirations, and potential of every learner.
