Bassetti completed the redevelopment of four buildings on the West Vancouver Barracks site, including the Infantry Barracks, Dental Surgeon Building, Quartermaster Building, and remaining portions of the partially renovated Artillery Barracks. As a key component of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Reserve District, and a fundamental piece of the City’s vision for a vibrant cultural arts environment within the historic district, the project is being developed for a variety of uses, including market rate housing, retail, office, conference, restaurant, and gallery spaces.

Our client’s goal was to provide as many new uses as possible within existing buildings while making as few modifications to the historic envelopes of the structures as possible. The original entrances were reused in each case to reinforce the historic character of each structure. Key internal features were also preserved, such as the original embossed metal ceilings of the Artillery Barracks.

The updated assemblage of historic structures creates flexibility for the City to provide numerous new civic and recreational uses. The renovated buildings offer retail, office, conference, restaurant, and gallery spaces that meet the needs of modern tenants – in addition to market-rate housing for the community – and strongly support the City’s vision of a vibrant, reborn cultural arts district.

The West Vancouver Barracks is on the National Register of Historic Places.
